CertainTeed Siding: Cost per Sq.Ft., Pros & Cons, Comparisons

What's a Typical Cost To Install New Siding? Average Price: $5,780 - $8,210

CertainTeed siding is considered by many to be the gold standard for vinyl siding, the brand that all others like Alside, Ply Gem brands (Georgia Pacific & Mastic) Royal and those sold at Lowe’s and Home Depot are compared to. To be sure, some CertainTeed siding lines are premium in quality. Others are above average, and some are just so-so in quality and durability.

Right off the bat CertainTeed siding installation cost can range anywhere from $8.00 to $17.00 per square foot, depending on the siding line you choose and project specific variables like complexity, where you live, and the contractor you select for the job. That said, the most common CertainTeed siding jobs run between $11.00 and $15.00 per square foot installed.

But is CertainTeed vinyl siding any good?

Yes. It is average to very good in quality and durability. The Monogram line is one of the better-rated lines available. At the entry-level end of the spectrum, Encore is a cheap vinyl siding line that is only slightly better than most of what you find at the big box stores.

CertainTeed siding does not take the top spot for quality in many lists from independent testers and siding contractors. But it certainly doesn’t fall to the bottom of anyone’s rankings.

CertainTeed does back all lines with a lifetime non-prorated warranty to the original owner. The warranty is prorated at a fairly steep rate – 10% coverage after 14 years – to subsequent owners.

How much does it cost to side a typical house with CertainTeed vinyl siding?

Expect CertainTeed vinyl siding cost estimates between $10,500 and $17,200 for a typical 2,000 square foot home.

A CertainTeed siding price list plus example project costs for homes of various sizes are found below.

Average CertainTeed Vinyl Siding Cost per Sq. Ft. for a Typical Installation

The current average cost range is between $11.00 and $14.00 per square foot for options like the popular CertainTeed Monogram (premium), Carolina Beaded (midrange) and Mainstreet (affordable) siding series. Complex jobs and those where the cost of living is well above average cost more.

How much vinyl siding do I need?

Enough siding will be ordered to cover all exterior wall surfaces plus about 5% for trim waste and extra siding to have some for future repairs.

A siding estimator measures the length and height of a home’s exterior walls to get their square feet. A total is compiled for all sections. Gable square footage is determined using the formula Area = ½(base x height).

Square footage is removed from the total for windows, doors and sliding glass doors.

What does the installed cost include?

All the materials and supplies needed, plus the cost of professional labor, and workmanship warranty.

Materials

If you find the cost of a CertainTeed vinyl siding panel and multiply its cost by the number you need to cover your home, your material cost will be too low by $1.50 – $3.00 per square foot.

When siding a home, professional contractors will factor in the following:

  • Siding plus about 5% extra.
  • New house wrap like DuPont Tyvek
  • Starter strip, J-channel and F-channel for holding the siding in place on exterior walls, around windows, etc.
  • Inside and outside corners
  • Trim for at the eaves and around openings for vents, water spigot, electrical outlets, etc.
  • Drip cap and flashing for above windows.
  • Molding/Trim and other decorative accessories.
  • Mounting blocks for lights and outlets.
  • Vented soffit for the eaves (optional).
  • Vinyl or aluminum fascia (optional).
  • Fasteners – typically nails (preferred), but some use staples.

Professional Labor

With today’s inflated costs, labor is very expensive. Expect to pay $6.00 to $11.00 per square foot in labor charges. When the old siding is removed, the cost is at the upper end of the range.

CertainTeed Siding Calculator Tables

The tables below consider the average amount of siding on homes of these sizes. The exterior surface area, not the home’s square footage, is used.

The calculations account for space taken up by windows, doors, and other non-siding surfaces.

FYI: The non-siding surfaces start at about 10% on a home with few and/or small windows and can be as much as 50% on homes with a lot of large windows and more than 2 entry doors., so 80% of the exterior is siding.

The cost of CertainTeed vs other vinyl siding is fairly competitive, though CertainTeed tends to be the highest priced vinyl in each tier of basic (builders grade), better/most popular and best/premium.

Wood composite brands like LP Smartside are comparable in cost to CertainTeed siding, and so is aluminum/steel siding. Hardie fiber cement costs a little more.

Cheap wood siding costs less than CertainTeed, but better grades of genuine wood siding are more expensive. Of course, brick and stone siding products are your most expensive options.

Horizontal Panels

Monogram & Monogram XL

CertainTeed’s best line is considered a premium siding at .046” thick. How thick is that? Approx. 22 pieces stacked up is 1” high.

The Monogram XL siding in 16’, 20’ and 25’ panels has several advantages. The cost is less per square foot than standard Monogram siding. Secondly, the panels can be installed faster because each piece covers more of the house. Finally, there are fewer pieces, so fewer ends showing.

On the downside, longer panels might require two installers and potentially create more waste, so your total installed cost could be higher.

The best reason to choose Monogram is: If you want a premium, proven siding with robust wood texturing – and one that is available everywhere in the US. And if you prefer fewer ends showing, go with an XL length.

Restoration Classic

Available in 30 colors, this vinyl siding gives you five finish options including Smooth and Select Cedar clapboard and Select Cedar Dutchlap in several profiles.

The best reason to choose Restoration Classic is: If you have a traditional home that needs an update. It’s a good fit for new construction too when the design is traditional. Plus, the wide range of colors gives you more options than most other lines.

Carolina Beaded

The beaded siding has a mostly flat surface with a single bead at the lower edge of the plank. Your only profile option is a single 6.5” panel available in 15 classic colors.

Best reason to choose Carolina Beaded: If you want a unique, classic look. Definitely check out a few homes like yours with beaded siding before you finalize your choice. It’s not right for every home – but looks fabulous when it is a good fit.

Mainstreet

Mainstreet is a popular CertainTeed vinyl with 7 profile options in Dutchlap, clapboard and beaded. Woodgrain and brushed textures are used.

This is a thinner siding at 0.42”, so about 24 stacked up make an inch. It is good value with a balance of decent quality and a lower cost than thicker CertainTeed siding.

Best reason to choose Mainstreet: If you want to save a few dollars on a midrange, commonly used vinyl siding, you’ll be happy with Mainstreet. Plus, the wide range of profiles gives you the opportunity to choose a “best look” for your home.

American Legend

This is another .042” siding – not quite cheap, but certainly not premium. You have a good spectrum of traditional colors available in clapboard and Dutchlap profiles with woodgrain finish.

Best reason to choose American Legend: If vinyl is the material of choice where you live, and you want your home to fit neighborhood standards. This is one reason this option is popular for homeowners updating their home with a view to sell in 5-10 years. They don’t want anything that seems out of place.

Encore

This is budget CertainTeed siding, just .040” thick, or about 25 pieces to the inch. However, it provides a deeper texture than many cheap vinyl siding choices.

Encore sells well and has a woodgrain finish. Two clapboard and one Dutchlap profiles are offered in 13 or 15 colors depending on which style you select.

Best reason to choose Encore: This is a value-priced siding. If you trust your contractor, and they recommend it as an affordable option, then Encore makes sense. If you plan to sell your home and most homes on your street have a better-quality siding, you might want to upgrade your selection to Mainstreet or even Monogram.

Vertical Siding

Single 7″ & 8″ Board & Batten

Vertically installed CertainTeed board & batten siding is manufactured in 2 widths. The 7” panels are .052” thick while the 8” panels are thinner at .048”.

Board & batten siding can be used to cover the entire home, of course. But it is also used as an accent siding.

Best reason to choose Single 7” or 8” Board & Batten: If you prefer something out of the ordinary – and board & batten works on your home’s design, then it makes sense by itself or in combination with other siding types. It goes well in gables when horizontal siding is used beneath it.

Northwoods Single 7″ Shingle & Shake Siding

These are panels of siding with a profile formed to look like wood shingle or shakes. Three profiles are offered – traditional Perfection shingle (21 colors), Sawmill shingle (11 colors) and Straight-edge Rough-split shakes (12 colors).

Best reason to choose Northwoods Single 7” shingles or shakes: If you plan to use it as an accent siding in combo with horizontal siding, stone or some brick. Yes, it can be the lone siding on a home, but based on the house’s exterior design, all-shake and all-shingle exteriors can look a bit “busy.”

Insulated Siding

CedarBoards in horizontal and board & batten styles are the CertainTeed insulated vinyl siding choices.

The horizontal double-6” clapboard siding offers R2.0 insulation, and the single-7” clapboard has R2.2 insulation value. These siding options are produced in 18 and 17 colors respectively.

The CedarBoards single-12” Board & Batten siding delivers an insulation value of R2.7. Choose from 8 colors.

Best reason to choose CedarBoards Insulated siding: If your exterior walls are poorly insulated, and your weather is extreme. If your home has adequate insulation, then insulated siding regardless of the brand is not good value. You won’t recoup the extra cost through lower energy bills for 15+ years – and maybe never.

What is CertainTeed Siding? How Is It Made?

All CertainTeed vinyl siding is produced from PVC resin. The resin is liquified and colored, and the panels of siding are extruded. During the process, a top layer called a capstock is reinforced with a proprietary polymer blend for added strength and resistance to UV fading.

The surface is embossed with texture to replicate wood grain and cured. Panels are cut to sizes and boxed. Typically, a box contains 2 squares of siding, i.e., enough to cover 200 square feet.

CertainTeed vinyl is waterproof, though that doesn’t necessarily prevent moisture from getting behind it and into your home’s framing. There is more information in the CertainTeed siding pros and cons below.

Siding Professional Labor Costs and Factors

Pro installation costs between $6.00 and $11.00 per square foot. That’s a very wide range. Here are the factors affecting labor rates:

Where you Live: For exterior remodeling work, this is the most significant factor. Our data shows contractors charge much higher prices where the cost of living is high and where labor is tight. As a result, a $15,000 siding job in the Midwest can easily be $22,000 or more in the Northeast.

Average Cost To Install New Siding Typical Range: $5,780 - $8,210
See costs in your area

Home Complexity: Siding contractors consider how much time a job is going to take more than they factor in how much material is going to be installed. When a home has a complex, multi-story design, it will produce much higher labor rates per square foot.

Time of Year: During peak remodeling season, estimates can be 50% or higher than at slower times of the year.

Siding: As you see in the Price List above, siding costs vary considerably from the most affordable to costliest.

Accessories: CertainTeed makes vinyl soffit, fascia, and trim, and it is typically more expensive than cheaper generic options available to installers. When you choose premium CertainTeed vinyl accessories, you’ll pay more.

CertainTeed Siding Pros and Cons

Here are the advantages and disadvantages of choosing CertainTeed.

Pros

Quality – The low-end lines like Encore and Mainstreet are better than other cheap vinyl siding choices. And the better CertainTeed lines like Monogram and Restoration Classic compare favorably to most competitors from Ply Gem, Mitten and Kaycan.

Durability – See Quality above – CertainTeed siding longevity is as good or better than most competitors in each tier – basic, better and best grades of siding.

TrueTexture – A technology that produces the rough cedar finish on some series from forms made using genuine cedar boards.

Patented STUDfinder – Markings on the siding that shows where studs should be located

RigidForm 210 Technology – This is a rolled hem, making it double-wind, that helps hold the siding in place with wind load pressures up to 210 mph.

Fade-resistance – Vinyl will fade over time in direct sunlight, but CertainTeed holds its color quite well.

Availability – No other brands are sold as widely as CertainTeed. Most local siding contractors can get it wholesale. Menards also carries it nationwide.

Warranty – The CertainTeed warranty is Lifetime for all vinyl siding lines.

ColorView – CertainTeed’s visualizer allows you to upload a picture of your home – or any home – or choose a sample from its gallery. And then you can select siding in your preferred color to see what it will look like on the house. Since CertainTeed makes roofing and other exterior materials, you can try out those options too using ColorView.

Cons

Cost – CertainTeed is a quality brand, and price is higher than average when considering brands that are comparable in quality such as Alside, Norandex and Revere.

Warranty for Second Owner – The warranty for the original owner is very good, but it is prorated fairly harshly for second owners and beyond.

Heat – Like all vinyl siding, this brand will warp or melt in extreme heat. It is not fire-resistant.

Durability – How Long Does CertainTeed Vinyl Siding Last?

How does CertainTeed siding durability compare to other siding materials?

Vinyl siding: 12 – 25 years

SmartSide wood composite siding: 20 – 35 years
